In Mourning absolutely nailed it with their debut masterpiece "Shrouded Divine", and this 2022 remastered edition proves why this album still hits like a freight train after all these years. It is even rarer that this band out of nowhere proposes an album as mature, intense and personal as the Swedish melodeath proggers of In Mourning have with "Shrouded Divine". What makes this record so special is how the Swedish quintet managed to craft something that feels both brutally heavy and hauntingly beautiful - melodic, beautiful, dark and powerful; melancholic, brutal, and in extreme cases even worthy of a sing along or two. The guitar work here is absolutely insane, with three guitarists creating these massive walls of sound that shift from crushing doom passages to soaring melodic leads without missing a beat.

The album's genius lies in its dynamic range and emotional depth. The guitar work is completely stunning, the band doesn't overuse riffs or chord progressions, each song has its own personality, atmosphere and feeling. Tracks like "The Black Lodge" showcase their ability to build epic, atmospheric pieces, while cuts like "Amnesia" bring the aggression hard. The vocals switch between crushing growls and these surprisingly effective clean passages that add another layer to the band's progressive approach. The atmosphere is at the same time epic and melancholic. The vocals vary between deep intelligible growling vocals and higher pitched aggressive snarling. This remastered version by Håkan Åkesson brings out every nuance of the original recording, making it sound massive and crystal clear.
